There are plenty of lovely spots to stay on the Sunshine Coast but our family likes the way Caloundra combines the relaxation of a ‘barefoot beach holiday’ with good dining options and upmarket yet affordable accommodation like Rumba Beach Resort. Since we’ve stayed at this hotel a few times now, we thought we would pass on some of our top Rumba tips for parents (and their kids). If you’re trying to work out which room category to book at the resort, the following photos should help. The one below is taken from the balcony of a 2 bedroom resort spa suite.
These rooms offer great value but they don’t have full ocean views. However, we got lucky as our room on Level 2 did had ‘ocean glimpses’. Most of these rooms overlook the main pool which makes them a great option if you have young teens you want to keep an eye on in the pool. However, they can get quite noisy with all that watery fun going on below so are perhaps not the best choice for a romantic getaway. If you are on a budget and looking for romance, the one bedroom resort spa suites are perfect. These overlook the lap pool and have a view similar to the one in the photo above.
While these suites are not at the front of the resort, they all have ocean views (higher floor rooms are the best). Our favourite rooms are the 2 bedroom ocean apartments which are right at the front of the resort and directly across from Bulcock Beach. The 3 bedroom ocean apartments also have the same view but as we only have one child, we have only stayed in 2 bedroom apartments. These rooms have a full view of the ocean and beyond to Bribie Island. Kite surfers are usually on hand to keep you entertained with their stunts during the day and the beach is patrolled so you can go swimming. As evening descends the Glasshouse Mountains are lit from behind by the setting sun and you can watch the sunset cruise boats head out.
Each apartment has a white colour scheme with blonde wood and quality fittings, a full kitchen and a spa tub that’s big enough for two. The apartments are tidied by housekeeping every day which is a nice surprise as it is not something that usually happens with this type of accommodation. Rumba also has a giant outdoor Jacuzzi and two sparkling swimming pools. The lap pool has portholes looking onto the street and restaurant below which will keep your kids entertained for hours. Don’t forget to bring goggles for them so they can make the most of this cool feature.
Bulcock Beach has calm water that is especially good for children but if you feel like catching a wave Kings Beach is only a 10 minute walk away. Here you will also find a free water play area that provides a fun way for kids to burn off some energy. There is a picturesque boardwalk connecting the beaches which makes for a lovely stroll, especially in the morning or late evening.
Dining options include a funky burger bar, fish and chips restaurant, Hogs Breath Café, Coffee Club and many other choices. On Sundays the street behind the resort is closed and transforms into the Caloundra Street Fair with interesting stalls and musical performances. If you don’t have a car, it’s easy to get to and from Rumba Beach Resort from Brisbane using public transport. Simply catch the train to Landsborough station and then take the council bus to the Caloundra bus station which is an easy 100 metre walk from the resort. This is the ‘end of the line’ so there is no worry about missing your stop. If you are driving, undercover parking at the resort is free.
